The civil engineers subcontracted by the Utility companies generate huge quantities of off-cuts when cable laying or pipe laying so we have now sourced these 2m x 200 mm long off-cuts locally near Bath and Bristol.
We have made them into vertical planters drilled at intervals with holes big enough to plant into when filled with soil.

The pipes are available ready drilled together with a geo-textile insert so that once planted the soil won't fall out of the holes! All you need to do is bury the pipe 50-60cm in the ground, insert the bag and fill with growing medium. Once filled, slit the geo-textile and push your plant plugs into the soil. Water, and wait for the veg to grow!
We've tried strawberries, lettuce, parsley and celery leaf but you can mix salad with ornamentals like grasses, marigolds and insect loving plants.
Our planters have recently been selected for The Independent's 'The Ten Best Outdoor Living Essentials'.
