Design procedure and fees

Firstly, I arrange a meeting to discuss your brief. This is free locally but if travel arrangements have to be made and an overnight stay is necessary then these are charged at cost plus a small ‘downtime’ charge.

After we have agreed terms of engagement, I arrange a site survey of your garden in relation to the house. For smaller gardens with few level changes, I do this myself at a £35/hr rate. This fee will include transferring the measurements to CAD to kick off the design stage.

For large gardens and with those with complex levels, I arrange for a professional surveyor to plot your garden to line and level and this is done at the rates agreed by the surveyor. The surveyor will then e-mail me the drawings for CAD and supply spare paper copies for you. Once the survey has been completed, I start playing around with ideas until I have roughed out a plan to present to you. The design process is charged at £45/hr with a minimum charge of £400. For more complex gardens, I often charge by taking 8% of the total build budget as a fixed fee. This is in line with most designers and Architects and provides a ceiling figure for budgeting purposes.

Once we’ve agreed the concept for the garden, I will prepare plans for construction and either price the job myself for building or get two other estimates from other reputable landscape contractors. From there, we finalise the plans and make any adjustments and design changes and then set about getting your garden built!
